From Early Detection to Late Recognition, Issue 1

Improving Detection of CF Across the Lifespan: From Newborn Screening through Adult Diagnosis

In this issue:

This issue focuses (explores strategies to improve) on improving cystic fibrosis (CF) detection across the lifespan, highlighting national consensus guidance for newborn screening program design and strategies to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in CF diagnosis. It also underscores the need for expanded CFTR variant panels, safety net newborn screening approaches, and vigilant recognition of CF in adults with certain clinical features.

Learning objectives:

  • Describe emerging newborn screening approaches and expanded CFTR variant panels that enhance early detection of CF across diverse populations.

  • Identify the clinical features and diagnostic strategies for recognizing cystic fibrosis in adults, including atypical and late-diagnosed cases, to ensure diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
