Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) pulmonary infections are increasing among people with cystic fibrosis (CF). Both diagnosis and treatment are challenging: the guidelines published by the CF Foundation and the European CF Society have not been validated in people with CF. As a result, despite long treatment regimens (with associated drug-related toxicity), NTM eradication often fails.
In this Special Edition issue, Dr. Jerry Nick, Director of the Adult CF Program at National Jewish Health in Denver, analyzes some of the recently published literature describing NTM epidemiology and transmissibility, as well as the trials of new antibiotics that may be suitable for treating people with cystic fibrosis.
Also, in the audio portion of this Special Edition issue, Dr. Nick discusses some of the key findings with eCysticFibrosis Review program director Dr. Peter Mogayzel.
