Course Format

The eHIV Review series consists of a monthly review of journal literature on key, pertinent topics, emailed as either a newsletter or podcast, to clinicians caring for patients with HIV. The timely commentary on current research, best practices and clinical management issues is provided by an expert panel of HIV specialists. The activities are delivered as 6 bi-monthly newsletters and 6 alternating podcasts. Participants will have up to 2 years to complete the 6 newsletters and 6 podcasts in order to earn CME credit.

Estimated time to complete each activity: 60 minutes per newsletter, 30 minutes per podcast.

Target Audience

The target audience (clinicians) for this initiative includes PCPs, NPs, PAs, HIV specialists, OB/GYNs, infectious diseases physicians, and others involved in the care of patients with HIV.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Explain how newly approved (and in late-stage development) HIV therapies may affect current ARV regimens.
  • Explain the advantages of switching patients to newer HIV therapies (eg. TAF, dolutegravir, bictegravir) to limit comorbidities, including renal and bone, as well as hepatic, cardiovascular, metabolic, and pulmonary.
  • Identify current high-risk populations (young PWID, rural MSM, et al) to screen for HIV and determine options for linking these patients to appropriate treatment.
  • Analyze real world reports of the positive & negative effects of newer HIV medications among patients switched from older medication regimens as well as treatment naïve patients.
  • Discuss adherence techniques.
  • Discuss new data regarding PrEP use, especially in the setting of the "U=U" campaign.

Statement of Need

  • Clinicians are reluctant to switch medications for patients who are virally suppressed, despite the improved safety profiles of new ARV drugs.
  • Clinicians are not adequately screening people who inject drugs (PWID) for HIV infection, leading to potential infection in high-risk individuals.

Successful Completion

To receive credit, participants must (1) read the learning objectives and disclosure statements, (2) complete the educational activity, and (3) complete the post-test and activity evaluation form, including the certificate information section. Physicians must attest to the amount of time they spent on the activity.

A passing grade of 70% or higher on the post-test/evaluation is required to receive CME credit.

Intended Audience

The target audience (clinicians) for this initiative includes PCPs, NPs, PAs, HIV specialists, OB/GYNs, infectious diseases physicians, and others involved in the care of patients with HIV.

There are no fees or prerequisites for this activity.
