This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing. Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Successful completion of this CME activity enables the participant to earn up to 6 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC points.

Please note, MOC credit is reported on a monthly basis.

Podcast: These paired 0.5 contact hour Educational Activities are provided by the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing. Each podcast carries a maximum of 0.5 contact hour, or a total of 3 contact hours for the 6 podcasts in this program.

Course Format

The eHIV Review series consists of a monthly review of journal literature on key, pertinent topics, emailed as either a newsletter or podcast, to clinicians caring for patients with HIV. The timely commentary on current research, best practices and clinical management issues is provided by an expert panel of HIV specialists. The activities are delivered as 6 bi-monthly newsletters and 6 alternating podcasts. Participants will have up to 2 years to complete the 6 newsletters and 6 podcasts in order to earn CME credit.

Estimated time to complete each activity: 60 minutes per newsletter, 30 minutes per podcast.

Target Audience

The target audience (clinicians) for this initiative includes PCPs, NPs, PAs, HIV specialists, OB/GYNs, infectious diseases physicians, and others involved in the care of patients with HIV.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, the learner will demonstrate the ability to:

Identify patients who should be screened for HIV at appropriate intervals.
Explain the importance of screening, preventing, and treating HIV in people who use drugs.
Assess factors associated with at-risk populations (transgender, elderly), that may complicate treatment or warrant special considerations.
Evaluate data concerning safety and efficacy of switching virally suppressed patients to medications with lower risk of side effects or drug interactions or those with simpler/dosing/administration requirements.

Statement of Need

Clinicians are not adequately screening high-risk populations, including men who have sex with men and transgender persons, for HIV.
People who inject drugs remain at high risk of acquiring HIV, yet clinicians are not adequately screening, preventing, and treating HIV in people who inject drugs.
When selecting treatment regimens for at-risk populatations, clinicians must be aware of special circumstances for specific populations with HIV.
Clinicians may be discussing opportunities to improve adherence or to minimize side effects by switching their virally suppressed patients to regimens with lower side effect profiles and simpler dosing and administration.

Successful Completion

To receive credit, participants must (1) read the learning objectives and disclosure statements, (2) complete the educational activity, and (3) complete the post-test and activity evaluation form, including the certificate information section. Physicians must attest to the amount of time they spent on the activity.

A passing grade of 70% or higher on the post-test/evaluation is required to receive CME credit.
