Accreditation Statements

Physicians

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing. Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Successful completion of this CME activity enables the participant to earn up to 1 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC points.

Please note, MOC credit is reported on a monthly basis.

eNewsletter: This 1 contact hour Educational Activity is provided by the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing. Each Newsletter carries a maximum of 1 contact hour, or a total of 6.0 contact hours for the 6 newsletters in this program. 

Podcast:These paired 0.5 contact hour Educational Activities are provided by the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing. Each podcast carries a maximum of 0.5 contact hour, or a total of 3.0 contact hours for the 6 podcasts in this program. 

Course Format

The eHIV Review series consists of a monthly review of journal literature on key, pertinent topics, emailed as either a newsletter or podcast, to clinicians caring for patients with HIV. The timely commentary on current research, best practices and clinical management issues is provided by an expert panel of HIV specialists. The activities are delivered as 6 bi-monthly newsletters and 6 alternating podcasts. Participants will have up to 2 years to complete the 6 newsletters and 6 podcasts in order to earn CME credit.

Estimated time to complete each activity: 60 minutes per newsletter, 30 minutes per podcast. 

Learning Objectives

After attending this activity, the learner will demonstrate the ability to: 

  • Identify recommended HIV screening protocols and develop a plan to implement them in practice.   
  • Evaluate how specific populations experience increased risk for HIV transmission and worse HIV outcomes.   
  • Determine how newer therapies may be beneficial to both treatment-naïve and treatment-experienced patients 
  • Assess the benefits and limitations of long-acting ART.  
  • Describe the benefits of rapid initiation of ART.  
  • Adapt ART treatments to a patient’s individualized potential for weight fluctuation as a result of treatment.

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine takes responsibility for the content, quality, and scientific integrity of this CME activity. 

Statement of Need

  • Screening for HIV is inadequate and leaves many people with undiagnosed HIV. 
  • Black and Hispanic/Latino and young MSM, who are at highest risk of HIV, are not adequately screened for HIV, leaving them unprotected and without diagnoses. 
  • Clinicians need education about newer HIV medications.  
  • Clinicians are unfamiliar with patient selection, administration, and clinical trial data for long-acting ART. 
  • Clinicians need education about rapid initiation of ART for HIV.
  • Clinicians need education about weight gain after initiating or switching ART so they may effectively individualize treatment for their patients with HIV.

Successful Completion

To receive credit, participants must (1) read the learning objectives and disclosure statements, (2) complete the educational activity, and (3) complete the post-test and activity evaluation form, including the certificate information section. Physicians must attest to the amount of time they spent on the activity. 

A passing grade of 70% or higher on the post-test/evaluation is required to receive CME credit and nursing contact hours. 

Intended Audience

The target audience (clinicians) for this initiative includes PCPs, NPs, PAs, HIV specialists, OB/GYNs, infectious diseases physicians, and others involved in the care of patients with HIV. 

There are no fees or prerequisites for this activity.
