Accreditation Statements

Physicians

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing. Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Successful completion of this CME activity enables the participant to earn up to 6 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC points.

Please note, MOC credit is reported on a monthly basis.

Podcast: These paired 0.5 contact hour Educational Activities are provided by the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing. Each podcast carries a maximum of 0.5 contact hour, or a total of 3 contact hours for the 6 podcasts in this program.

Course Format

The eHIV Review series consists of a monthly review of journal literature on key, pertinent topics, emailed as either a newsletter or podcast, to clinicians caring for patients with HIV. The timely commentary on current research, best practices and clinical management issues is provided by an expert panel of HIV specialists. The activities are delivered as 6 bi-monthly newsletters and 6 alternating podcasts. Participants will have up to 2 years to complete the 6 newsletters and 6 podcasts in order to earn CME credit.

Estimated time to complete each activity: 60 minutes per newsletter, 30 minutes per podcast.

Target Audience

The target audience (clinicians) for this initiative includes PCPs, NPs, PAs, HIV specialists, OB/GYNs, infectious diseases physicians, and others involved in the care of patients with HIV.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Discuss effective strategies to screen patients in high-risk patient populations for HIV infection.
  • Assess barriers associated with initiating PrEP therapy and implement strategies to effectively in­form patients of the benefits of PrEP.
  • Identify barriers for initiating PrEP therapy for PWID and discuss interventions that could prevent HIV transmission.
  • Examine challenges for aging populations mana­ging HIV, including stigma, comorbidities, and cur­rent and emerging therapies that could improve long-term patient outcomes.
  • Describe new and emerging data on initiating therapy using two-drug regimens that may improve patient outcomes.
  • Examine special considerations that must be made for underserved patient populations (e.g. women, elderly) in the treatment and management of HIV.

The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine takes responsibility for the content, quality, and scientific integrity of this CME activity.

Statement of Need

  • Clinicians are not adequately screening high-risk populations, including men who have sex with men, transgender persons, those with psychiatric illness, and those who are economically disadvantaged.
  • Clinicians are not implementing preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in patients who may benefit.
  • PWID remain at high risk of acquiring HIV, yet clinicians are not adequately screening PWID for HIV, prescribing PrEP in HIV, and treating HIV in PWID.
  • Clinicians are not aware of special considerations for the elderly population and those who may face risk of side effects or drug interactions with their currently used HIV medications.
  • When selecting treatment regimens, clinicians must be aware of special circumstances for specific populations of people with HIV.
  • Clinicians treating people with HIV should be aware of accumulating data pertaining to two-drug regimens for initiation or maintenance of ART treatment.

Successful Completion

To receive credit, participants must (1) read the learning objectives and disclosure statements, (2) complete the educational activity, and (3) complete the post-test and activity evaluation form, including the certificate information section. Physicians must attest to the amount of time they spent on the activity.

A passing grade of 70% or higher on the post-test/evaluation is required to receive CME credit.

Intended Audience

The target audience (clinicians) for this initiative includes PCPs, NPs, PAs, HIV specialists, OB/GYNs, infectious diseases physicians, and others involved in the care of patients with HIV.

There are no fees or prerequisites for this activity.
