Accreditation Statements

Physicians

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing. Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Successful completion of this CME activity enables the participant to earn up to 6 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC points.

Please note, MOC credit is reported on a monthly basis.

eNewsletter: This 1 contact hour Educational Activity is provided by the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing. Each Newsletter carries a maximum of 1 contact hour, or a total of 6.0 contact hours for the 6 newsletters in this program. 

Podcast:These paired 0.5 contact hour Educational Activities are provided by the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing. Each podcast carries a maximum of 0.5 contact hour, or a total of 3.0 contact hours for the 6 podcasts in this program. 

Course Format

The eHIV Review series consists of a monthly review of journal literature on key, pertinent topics, emailed as either a newsletter or podcast, to clinicians caring for patients with HIV. The timely commentary on current research, best practices and clinical management issues is provided by an expert panel of HIV specialists. The activities are delivered as 6 bi-monthly newsletters and 6 alternating podcasts. Participants will have up to 2 years to complete the 6 newsletters and 6 podcasts in order to earn CME credit.

Expiration date: December 5, 2025 

Estimated time to complete each activity: 60 minutes per newsletter, 30 minutes per podcast. 

Learning Objectives

After attending this activity, the learner will demonstrate the ability to: 

  • Discuss strategies to overcome barriers, specifically stigma, that lead to undertreatment and poor outcomes for at-risk populations. 
  • Develop plans to overcome barriers that restrict HIV testing, preventative care, and treatment for young people.
  • Describe the impact of stigma on the mental health of LGBTQ people and people living with HIV.
  • Describe clinical trial data for emerging ART and PrEP options.
  • Assess the appropriateness of including an NNRTI in the ART regimen for certain patients.
  • Discuss strategies that improve testing, PrEP, and HIV treatment in cisgender and transgender women.

Statement of Need

  • Clinicians are not effectively addressing barriers, including stigma, that lead to disparities in HIV prevention and treatment.  
  • Clinicians are not adequately testing for HIV, offering PrEP, or treating youth and young adults with HIV.  
  • Clinicians are not adequately addressing the mental health needs of the LGBTQ community and people living with HIV.
  • Clinicians need education about newer and in-development options for treating (ART) and preventing (PrEP) HIV. 
  • Clinicians need education about the utility of NNRTI HIV medications in the current treatment era.
  • Clinicians are not adequately testing for HIV, offering PrEP, and treating HIV in cisgender and transgender women, particularly those in communities of color.

Successful Completion

To receive credit, participants must (1) read the learning objectives and disclosure statements, (2) complete the educational activity, and (3) complete the post-test and activity evaluation form, including the certificate information section. Physicians must attest to the amount of time they spent on the activity. 

A passing grade of 70% or higher on the post-test/evaluation is required to receive CME credit and nursing contact hours.

Intended Audience

The target audience (clinicians) for this initiative includes PCPs, NPs, PAs, HIV specialists, OB/GYNs, infectious diseases physicians, and others involved in the care of patients with HIV. 

There are no fees or prerequisites for this activity.
