This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the AccreditatioCouncil for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing. The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

eNewsletter:This 1 contact hour Educational Activity is provided by the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing. Each Newsletter carries a maximum of 1 contact hour, or a total of 2.0 contact hours for the 2 newsletters in this program. 

Podcast:These paired 0.5 contact hour Educational Activities are provided by the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing. Each podcast carries a maximum of 0.5 contact hour, or a total of 1.5 contact hours for the 3 podcasts in this program. 

Course Format

The ePulmonology Review series consists of a monthly review of journal literature on key, pertinent topics, emailed as either a newsletter or podcast, to clinicians caring for patients with pulmonary conditions. The timely commentary on current research, best practices and clinical management issues is provided by an expert panel of pulmonary specialists. The activities are delivered as 2 bi-monthly newsletters and 3 alternating podcasts. Participants will have up to 2 years to complete the 2 newsletters and 3 podcasts in order to earn CME credit.

Expiration date: April 22, 2024 

Estimated time to complete each activity: 60 minutes per newsletter, 30 minutes per podcast. 

Learning Objectives

After attending in this activity, the learner will demonstrate the ability to: 

  • Recommend recent and emerging treatments for COPD as is appropriate.   
  • Translate GOLD guidelines into practice for patients with COPD. 
  • Identify approved and emerging biologic medications for asthma and actively integrate them into patient treatment regimens when appropriate.    
  • Translate 2020 NHLBI guidelines into clinical practice.

Statement of Need

  • As the number of available treatments for COPD increases, clinicians need education regarding selecting the most appropriate inhaled regimens for their patients.    
  • Clinicians are not assessing and monitoring symptoms properly, which may preclude optimal treatment selection based on recommended strategies.   
  • Clinicians treating patients with asthma are not sufficiently knowledgeable about approved and emerging biologic medications, including selection of appropriate medications for patients.    
  • Clinicians will require education on the new NHLBI guidelines for treatment of asthma when they are released.

Successful Completion

To receive credit, participants must (1) read the learning objectives and disclosure statements, (2) complete the educational activity, and (3) complete the post-test and activity evaluation form, including the certificate information section. Physicians must attest to the amount of time they spent on the activity. 

A passing grade of 70% or higher on the post-test/evaluation is required to receive CME credit and nursing contact hours. 

Intended Audience

The target audience (clinicians) for this initiative includes pulmonologists, primary care physicians, respiratory therapists, nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants who treat and manage patients with asthma, NSCLC, and COPD. 

There are no fees or prerequisites for this activity.
